What Happens Failure Of The Implant To Fuse To The Bone?
Failure Of The Implant To Fuse To The Bone
Trauma, age related causes, caries or various diseases can cause tooth loss. Tooth loss may have functional problems as well as psychological negativities due to the loss of aesthetic appearance. Today, although methods such as bridges are used to complete missing teeth, the most effective and most permanent method is implant. In the implant, which is a treatment method with a high success rate, a situation such as the implant placed from time to time may develop such that the implant does not fuse to the jawbone, and the causes should be investigated first to solve this problem.
Causes Of Implant Failure To Fuse To Bone?
- Wrong surgical technique used,
- Inexperience of the dentist performing the application,
- Development of infection at the application site,
- Insufficiency of the bones in the jaw region or poor quality of the bones in the region,
- Smoking,
- Habits such as teeth clenching or teeth grinding,
- Gum diseases,
- Osteoporosis (bone resorption),
- Cancer treatment,
- Diseases that suppress the rate and efficiency of metabolism.
In some cases, dental examination or imaging techniques may be necessary, as it can be easily understood by patients that the implants are not fused to the jawbone.
What Happens If The Implant Fails To Fuse To The Bone?
It may take approximately 3 months for the implant and the jawbone to fuse together. In some cases, the implant cannot adhere to the jawbone correctly and fusion does not occur. If a prosthesis is made in such a case, the prosthesis exerts pressure on the implant and this causes the implant to move. Movement can sometimes be recognised by the patients themselves, sometimes only by means of imaging techniques.
Some of the problems that may occur if the implant does not fuse to the bone are as follows:
- Despite the use of painkillers after the application, the pain persists for a long time and in the form of throbbing,
- There may be swelling in the gums for a few days after the application; but if these swellings become permanent and inflammation occurs, it means that the implant has not held,
- In cases of insufficient bone tissue, infection of the gums can occur, which can lead to resorption of bone tissue and recession of the gums,
- Some patients are allergic to titanium alloys and may experience swelling of the gums, tingling or loss of taste,
- Pain may be felt during activities such as talking, biting and eating.
All these symptoms indicate that the implants are not holding or that there is another problem. If any of these symptoms occur, you should consult your dentist immediately.
What To Do If The Implant Does Not Fuse To The Bone?
If the implant does not fuse to the bone, the first procedure is to remove the implant. Implant removal is similar to tooth extraction. After healing and new bone formation in the area, implant treatment can be repeated. However, in order to avoid the need for this, it will be almost impossible to encounter such problems in cases where both the technique to be applied is chosen correctly and the harmony, length and diameter of the implant in the mouth are calculated correctly. Therefore, the most important point for the successful outcome of implant treatment is to get help from an expert and experienced dentist.
