Porcelain Laminate Veneers in Istanbul, Turkey
Porcelain Laminate Veneers
in Turkey
Porcelain laminate veneers are thin ceramic shells, usually 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick, bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They correct colour, shape and proportions while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. At Ekiz Clinic in Istanbul, veneers are planned around your face, lips and gum line, with a natural-looking result as the main goal.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Lamina is the Latin word for “leaf”. A porcelain laminate veneer covers only the front surface of the tooth and lets light pass through in a similar way to natural enamel. While a crown or zirconia crown requires reducing every surface of the tooth, a veneer usually needs only a very small amount of enamel removed from the front, and in some cases none at all.
Veneers are generally made from two types of ceramic: hand-layered feldspathic porcelain and pressed lithium disilicate glass ceramic, best known by the brand name E-max. Feldspathic porcelain can be made extremely thin and translucent. E-max is stronger and gives more predictable results on teeth with noticeable discolouration. Your dentist chooses the material after assessing tooth colour, your bite and the result you are hoping for.
Who Are Veneers Suitable For?
Veneers work best for adults with healthy gums and enough enamel who have an aesthetic concern with their front teeth. Common reasons for treatment include:
- Permanent discolouration that does not respond to whitening (caused by medication, fluorosis or old fillings)
- Gaps between the front teeth (diastema)
- Worn, chipped or broken front teeth
- Teeth that are short or have an uneven shape or proportions
- Mild crowding that does not require orthodontic treatment
- Replacing old composite fillings that have lost their colour or shape
If the only concern is colour, teeth whitening may come first, and small chips or gaps can often be corrected more conservatively with composite bonding. These options are discussed during your consultation.
When Veneers Are Not Recommended
Veneers are not right for everyone. Treatment is postponed, or a different approach is suggested, in the following situations:
- Untreated decay or active gum disease. These problems are treated first.
- Severe clenching or grinding (bruxism). Without a night guard, the risk of fracture increases.
- Not enough enamel left for the veneer to bond to
- Significant crowding or bite problems. In these cases orthodontic treatment is considered first.
- Habits such as biting pens, nail biting or opening packaging with the teeth that cannot be stopped
- Advanced gum recession around the front teeth

How Are Natural-Looking Veneers Designed?
A natural result depends on more than colour. Tooth length, width proportions, the shape of the biting edges and surface texture are all planned. At Ekiz Clinic, the design is based on facial photographs, your smile line and lip movement. When needed, a digital plan is prepared with Digital Smile Design, and you can preview your new smile in the mouth with a temporary mock-up.
Instead of a uniform bright white, the shade is chosen to suit your skin and eye colour, with slight translucency at the edges. If the gum line is uneven, gum contouring may be recommended before the veneers. This way the result looks like your own teeth rather than obviously covered ones.
No-Prep and Minimal-Prep Veneers
The more natural tooth structure is preserved, the better the long-term outcome. Two conservative approaches stand out:
- No-prep veneers: Very thin veneers are bonded directly onto the enamel without any drilling. They suit small, slightly set-back or spaced teeth. If the teeth already sit forward or are large, this approach can make them look bulky. Read more on our no-prep veneers page.
- Minimal-prep veneers: A controlled preparation, usually 0.3 to 0.5 mm, is made within the enamel only. This gives a more natural thickness and edge fit on teeth with stronger discolouration or shape problems. Read more on our minimal-prep veneers page.
Where enamel is removed, the change cannot be reversed. Your dentist recommends the right approach after the examination, photographs and mock-up.
The Veneer Treatment Step by Step
- Examination and planning: An oral examination, X-rays if needed, photographs and a gum assessment. Any decay or gum problem is treated first.
- Design and mock-up: Your smile is designed and the new tooth shapes are tried in the mouth with a mock-up.
- Preparation and impressions: The planned preparation is carried out and an impression or digital scan is taken. Temporary veneers can be fitted on the same day if needed.
- Laboratory work: A dental technician makes your veneers individually from the chosen ceramic.
- Try-in and bonding: Colour and fit are checked in the mouth, and once you approve, the veneers are bonded with specialised adhesive systems.
- Follow-up: Your bite and gum response are checked one to two weeks later. Routine check-ups every six months are recommended.
When no additional gum treatment is needed, the process usually takes 2 to 3 appointments over about one week in Istanbul. Appointments for international patients are planned around this timeline.
Veneers vs Zirconia Crowns vs Bonding
- Porcelain veneers: Cover only the front surface and are the most tooth-preserving fixed ceramic option. Used for aesthetic improvements on the front teeth.
- Zirconia crowns: Cover the whole tooth and require more preparation. Preferred for heavily damaged, root-canal-treated or back teeth, and when a bridge is needed.
- Composite bonding: Tooth-coloured filling material shaped in the mouth in a single visit, usually without drilling. More affordable, but it can stain over time and may need replacing more often than porcelain.
If the goal is aesthetic and the front teeth are largely healthy, veneers are usually the more conservative choice. If a tooth has a large filling, a fracture or a root canal treatment, a crown may be the better option.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
How long veneers last depends on the type of ceramic, whether they are bonded mainly to enamel, your bite and how you care for them. In a clinical study with up to 22 years of follow-up, about 94% of porcelain veneers were still in use after 10 years and about 83% after 20 years (Beier et al., 2012).
The most common problems are fractures or cracks in the ceramic and veneers coming loose. Clenching and grinding increase this risk. A veneer that comes off can often be rebonded, and a broken veneer can be replaced on its own without touching the others.
Aftercare and Check-ups
- Brush twice a day with a soft brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste, and clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes.
- If you clench or grind, wear the night guard recommended by your dentist.
- Avoid cracking nuts, opening bottles and biting pens or nails.
- Porcelain resists staining from tea, coffee and smoking, but good oral hygiene keeps the edges clean.
- Keep up with check-ups and professional cleaning every six months.
What Affects the Cost of Veneers?
The cost of veneers is based on your personal treatment plan. The main factors are:
- The number of teeth treated
- The type of ceramic (feldspathic porcelain or E-max)
- Whether a no-prep or minimal-prep approach is used
- Any whitening, gum or orthodontic treatment needed beforehand
- Digital smile design and mock-up stages

Frequently Asked Questions About Porcelain Veneers
Preparation is usually done under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. No-prep veneers often do not require anaesthesia at all. Mild sensitivity to hot and cold can occur for a few days afterwards and settles quickly.
When the preparation is planned correctly and stays within the enamel, the tooth remains healthy and vital. However, where enamel is removed the change cannot be reversed, and those teeth will always need a covering in the future. This is why no-prep or minimal-prep approaches are preferred whenever they are suitable.
Not when they are planned properly. The thickness depends on the position of each tooth. A small preparation on teeth that sit forward, or no-prep veneers on small or set-back teeth, keeps a natural profile. The mock-up lets you see the result before treatment.
The glazed porcelain surface resists stains from tea, coffee and smoking and keeps its colour. Slight staining can appear at the cement line over time. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning help prevent this.
Porcelain is not affected by whitening gels. If you want to whiten your other teeth as well, whitening is done before veneer treatment and the veneer shade is matched to the new colour.
When no additional treatment is needed, veneers are completed in 2 to 3 appointments over about one week. If gum contouring or orthodontic treatment is required, the timeline is longer.
A broken or loose veneer is usually replaced or rebonded on that tooth only. The other veneers do not need to be touched.
