What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a professional procedure performed to achieve a whiter appearance of tooth color. This process is also called ‘bleaching’. Thanks to bleaching, your teeth can be brought to the desired white tone. The tooth color can be lightened by a few shades or whitened to the lightest shade.

There are also non-professional teeth whitening methods. For example, brushing teeth with lemon and baking soda is one of the most popular methods among the public. However, such methods can cause damage to tooth enamel. For this reason, tooth discoloration procedures must be performed professionally by a dentist.

A good level of oral and dental health is required for teeth whitening. Bleaching is not a suitable procedure for people with too many cavities or fillings. People with healthy gums who do not have decay or too many fillings can have teeth whitening.

How Is Teeth Whitening Done?

Before teeth whitening, the dentist takes a mold of the tooth. Then, bacteria and plaque formations on the teeth are cleaned. A gauze pad is usually used to keep the mouth dry. A barrier is placed in this area to protect the gums from the bleaching solution.

The bleaching solution is applied to the front surface of the teeth. Laser light is used to activate the solution. After the laser application, the solution is observed to foam. This means that the solution works and removes the stains on the teeth. The bleaching solution is left on the teeth for a few minutes.

The teeth are cleaned after the procedure. Bleaching procedures are usually performed in several sessions. The mentioned procedures are repeated several times to ensure that the teeth reach the desired whiteness. However, depending on the level of whiteness desired by the patient, only one session may be sufficient.

Who Can Have Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening may not be suitable for everyone. Generally, people under the age of 16 are not considered suitable candidates for the procedure. Bleaching is also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. People who are allergic to the bleaching solution are also not suitable candidates for this procedure.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Results Take?

The results of bleaching depend on the level of staining and yellowing of the teeth. It usually takes one or two weeks for the teeth to become visibly white. However, for people with high levels of yellowing and stains on their teeth, this may take between three weeks and a month.

What Should Be Considered After Teeth Whitening?

After bleaching, colorful foods and drinks should be avoided. Coffee, tea, chocolate, cherries and dark sauces should not be consumed for a while. Carbonated drinks should also be avoided for a while. Foods that should not be preferred include very cold or very hot meals.
