Post-Implant Treatment Care Instructions

Dear Our Patient,
The success of your implant surgery is directly influenced by how healthy and smooth your healing process progresses. Strict adherence to the rules outlined below is extremely important for preventing potential complications and ensuring the longevity of your implant.
Please read these instructions carefully and follow them as directed.

General Behavioral Guidelines

  • For the first 24 hours, do not rinse your mouth with any liquid including water, do not make sucking motions, and do not spit.
  • Do not drink beverages using a straw, as the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot and cause bleeding.
  • Do not force your mouth open to see the surgical site; avoid touching the operated area with your tongue or fingers.

Nutrition and Chewing

  • Be careful not to use the surgical side when eating.
  • Consume soft and lukewarm foods for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid extremely hot, extremely cold, hard, shelled, and seeded foods.
  • Spicy, acidic, and irritating foods may negatively affect the healing process.

Smoking and Tobacco Products

  • Cigarettes and all tobacco products delay wound healing and increase the risk of implant failure.
  • If possible, do not smoke for at least 1 week after implant treatment, ideally until the healing process is complete.

Cold Application and Swelling Control

  • Apply cold compress externally on the cheek over the surgical area for the first 24 hours.
  • Apply cold therapy in intervals of 10 minutes on – 10 minutes off.
  • Do not apply ice directly to your skin; always wrap it in a cloth or towel.
  • This application helps reduce swelling, pain, and bruising.

Physical Activity

  • Avoid heavy exercise, sports activities, and intense physical movements for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid sudden bending and head-down positions.

In Case of Bleeding

  • Slight oozing from the surgical area is normal.
  • If bleeding occurs, apply pressure to the surgical area with sterile gauze (available at pharmacies) for 20–30 minutes.
  • If bleeding continues, contact your doctor immediately.

Medication Use

  • Take antibiotics, pain relievers, and other medications prescribed by your doctor regularly at the specified doses and times. If you are allergic to any medication, inform your doctor in writing before taking it. Do not use any other medication without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) until the surgical wound has completely healed.
  • If you need to take aspirin for another health reason, be sure to inform your doctor.

Oral Hygiene and Cleaning

  • Pay maximum attention to oral hygiene to accelerate the healing process.
  • Brush your teeth regularly; however, clean the surgical area gently in the first few days.
  • You may use antiseptic mouthwash as recommended by your doctor.
  • If mouthwash use is recommended, follow the specified duration and frequency.

Stitches and Check-ups

  • Return to your doctor approximately 7 days after surgery for stitch removal (except for self-dissolving stitches).
  • Do not miss your follow-up appointments.

Emergency Situations

  • Contact your doctor immediately without delay in case of severe pain, increasing swelling, fever, heavy bleeding, bad odor, opening of stitches, feeling of movement in the implant area, or any unexpected situation.

Important Reminder

Failure to follow these rules may lead to undesirable outcomes such as infection, delayed healing, implant failure, or loss.
