Can Implants And Veneers Be Damaged?
Implants And Veneers
Implants and veneers are among the dental treatments that are frequently performed with the aim of both eliminating functional deficiencies and improving aesthetic appearance. These applications, which are very long-lasting and durable, can be deformed over time by taking damage due to use, just like normal teeth. However, all of these damages, which are too mild to be compared to severe toothache or loss, can be prevented in a timely manner with regular care and regular dental check-ups.
How Long Do Implants And Veneers Last?
Implants and veneers are treatments applied to solve different problems in the mouth. Implant treatment is applied to eliminate tooth gaps in the mouth and is performed by placing zirconium material screws into the jawbone. The implants, which are added to the openings left behind the extracted teeth, act as natural tooth roots, making it possible to apply various prosthesis and coating treatments later. Veneers, on the other hand, is a treatment that is applied to eliminate problems such as cracks, fractures and curvatures in existing teeth and supports aesthetic smile design.
Both applications are extremely long-lasting when done correctly. However, since implants are placed in the jawbone, they offer a longer-term use, while the risk of various deformations due to daily movements such as chewing, biting, impact, etc. is slightly higher in veneers.
In general, the lifetime of veneers varies according to personal care habits and veneer material, but it is around 10-15 years. However, this process can be extended with regular medical check-ups and oral care.
Why Are Implants And Veneers Damaged?
Implant and veneer treatments are long-lasting and permanent applications, but from time to time, various risky situations can increase the risk of damage in these applications.
Potential risks, which are commonly encountered and vary according to the treatment applied, are as follows:
Infection And Inflammation
If the material used in implant treatments is not recognised by the body, if the intervention is carried out carelessly or if oral care is not provided before treatment, inflammation and infection may develop in the gum tissue around the implant. This problem, which causes complaints such as severe pain, redness and swelling at the end of the operation, also threatens oral health by causing bad breath odour.
Implant infection detected in time as a result of regular control can be treated without the need for implant removal by thorough cleaning of the area with the help of special surgical instruments and the use of appropriate antibiotics.
Bone Loss
Another situation that carries a risk in implant treatments is that the implant placed in the jawbone does not provide sufficient bone compatibility and cannot hold on to the area and the tissue loss accelerates due to this. Under normal conditions, properly applied implant treatment stops the loss of the jawbone to a great extent and thus increases the long-term success of the implant.
However, such problems may arise as a result of the use of implants of the wrong size or structure, and in order to eliminate the problem, the bone analysis in the region should be performed correctly and then the appropriate treatment work should be initiated.
Implant Fracture
Implants placed in the jawbone are robust screws and are suitable for lifelong use, but in rare cases, problems such as loosening and fracture of the implant can occur. Usually, incorrect positioning, inadequate bone structure or severe trauma to the area cause a risk of fracture of the implant screw or implant abutment. In cases where the implant itself is not fractured and only the abutment or the part attached to the crown is broken, the treatment is relatively easy and requires part replacement. However, in cases where the implant itself is broken, it must be removed and replaced, and precision, hygiene and care are of extra importance in this process.
Failed Integration
Cases where the implant fails to integrate with the jaw bone are usually due to an incorrect evaluation of the jaw bone structure of the person. Although implant treatment is a highly successful and powerful application, it is not recommended for bone patients or individuals with weak immune systems. For this reason, the general health status should be well investigated in the first stage of treatment and one of the most suitable alternative treatments should be directed to the person.
Coating Edge Abrasion
Veneers added to the surface of the teeth are materials that are affected by daily activities such as feeding and chewing as much as normal teeth. For this reason, minor damage such as abrasion, leakage or cracking may occur over time, especially at the edges of the veneers. However, zirconium veneers, which have increased in use especially in recent years with their success in supporting aesthetic appearance and strong structure, are not affected by such actions and are not easily worn and deformed.
Colour Change
Discolouration of the veneers may occur due to excessive smoking and consumption of coloured beverages. In addition, due to the preference of coating materials with metal substructure, darkening may appear in the tissues around the coating, which may disrupt the intraoral harmony and disrupt the aesthetic appearance. However, zirconium veneers, which do not contain metal in their substructure, can be used for many years without discolouration with regular maintenance applications.
The severity, frequency and effect of damage in implant and coating treatments vary according to the individual. In addition, it is considered normal for various damages to occur, especially in long-term use, but regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene and following the dentist’s recommendations help to reduce these damages to a great extent.
