What Causes Black Spots on the Gums?
A smile is completed not only by the whiteness of the teeth but also by the healthy and uniform appearance of the gums.
Some people notice dark spots on the gums in the form of dots, lines, or larger areas, which can cause aesthetic concern. Most of the time, these are harmless, but sometimes they may indicate gum disease, reflection from metal restorations, or pigment accumulation. Therefore, black spots on the gums must be professionally evaluated.
Understanding the source of the spots is the first step in determining the correct treatment.
Most Common Causes of Black Spots on the Gums
1. Melanin Pigmentation
This occurs when there is an excess of melanin pigment, which determines the natural color of the gums.
It is more common in individuals with darker skin and those of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or African descent. It is healthy but can be aesthetically bothersome.
In this case, laser gum depigmentation is the most effective solution. After the procedure, the gums appear pinker and more uniform.
2. Smoking
In smokers, pigment increase known as “smoker’s melanosis” can occur.
The gums appear darker, especially in the front areas where discoloration is more pronounced.
Quitting smoking, improving oral hygiene, and, if necessary, pigment removal procedures can correct this.
3. Gray/Black Lines from Metal Restorations
In old metal-supported porcelain and metal fillings, over time, metal ions can cause dark shading at the gum line.
This usually appears as a “black line.”
Permanent solutions include:
- Replacing metal-supported crowns with zirconia/ceramic
- Adjusting gum levels if necessary
4. Dental Calculus and Bacterial Pigments
Tartar accumulated at the gum line can appear dark, especially when highly mineralized.
Some bacteria also produce pigments, creating black spots near the gums.
In this case, only professional tartar removal and regular maintenance solve the problem.
5. Pigment After Trauma or Injury
A blow to the gums, dental procedures, or piercings can lead to pigment deposition in the tissue.
Rarely, “amalgam tattoo” from metal particles can occur.
It can be quickly removed with a laser.
6. Gum Diseases
Dark coloration can sometimes result from impaired blood circulation.
Especially in inflamed and bleeding gums, the color appears darker and irregular.
Periodontal treatment is performed first, and aesthetic procedures are considered afterward.
How Is the Treatment Done?
The approach is determined according to the cause of the pigment:
- If melanin-related: laser depigmentation
- If there is a metal shadow: crown replacement + gum adjustment
- If there is tartar: professional cleaning
- If there is infection: periodontal treatment
- If post-trauma pigment: laser removal
Most procedures are short and recovery is quick.
Not every black spot is a disease; it can also be genetic pigmentation. However, proper evaluation is important for smile aesthetics and oral health.
Early diagnosis means both easier treatment and more aesthetic results. If you notice dark spots or shading on your gums, a dental check-up is the best step to determine the appropriate treatment option.
For a healthier, more aesthetic, and confident smile, care should also be given to the gums.
