Laminate veneer or leaf veneer is a frequently used method to give an aesthetic appearance to yellow, discolored, or stained, broken, worn, irregular, cracked, or teeth with similar problems. In this method, thin veneers prepared suitable for the teeth are placed on the tooth surface to achieve an aesthetic appearance. However, in this method, the teeth are subjected to an enamel removal process to adhere the leaf veneers to the teeth. In the no-prep / minimal-prep veneer method developed within the scope of aesthetic dental treatments, the enamel of the teeth does not need to be removed.
What Is No-Prep / Minimal-Prep Veneer?
In no-prep and minimal-prep veneer applications ultra-thin ceramic and composite materials are used, and there is no or little abrasion of the teeth. In minimal-prep veneer application, a very small amount of tooth enamel is removed and the tooth surface is not reduced. In no-prep veneer application, no abrasion or reduction is performed on the tooth surface. The prepared leaf veneers are placed directly on the teeth and the defects in the teeth are hidden under the veneers.
No-prep veneer and minimal-prep veneer applications can be applied to both upper and lower teeth. If an aesthetically harmonious and flawless image is desired to be created, replacing 10 veneers on the upper and 10 veneers on the lower jaw will give the desired result. Of course, the amount of veneers to be applied to the teeth here depends on the patient’s dental condition, their budgets, and the recommendations to be provided by the dentist.
Why Are No-Prep / Minimal-Prep Veneer Applications Necessary?
- No roughening or abrasion is required on the teeth so the natural teeth are protected. Both no-prep and minimal-prep veneers provide fast and aesthetic results in cases where the discoloration and teeth spacing are less.
- Since they are produced by taking the measurements of the teeth and adhered to the teeth with a special technique, they receive support from the tooth, and they are not damaged by impacts. Even if the tooth decays from the inside, the veneers stay the same.
In Which Situations Is No-Prep / Minimal-Prep Veneer Applied?
The laminate veneer method, which is usually applied to the front teeth, requires abrasion on the teeth. If there is no deformation, decay, irregularity, or damage such as cracks and fractures on the front teeth or smile line, no abrasion is required and no-prep veneer application can be performed. However, in some cases, a small amount of abrasion may be required and minimal-prep veneers can be applied.
How Are No-Prep Veneer And Minimal-Prep Veneer Applications Performed?
Firstly, a dentist examination is performed and the teeth are measured and transferred to the computer environment. Thanks to the smile design applications, digital rehearsal of the veneers is prepared suitable for the mouth and facial structure of the patients. After the patient and dentist agree, the application process starts.
The process steps in no-prep veneer application are as follows:
- The veneers modelled in the digital environment are sent to the laboratory environment; it takes between 7 to 10 days to prepare the veneers,
- After the veneers are ready, a physical rehearsal is performed on the patient and the harmony of the veneers with the facial line and mouth structure is checked,
- In case of any incompatibility, minimal revisions can be carried out on the coatings,
- There is no need for anaesthesia as no abrasion is performed and no pain is felt,
- The prepared veneers are bonded to the tooth surface with a special adhesive and the treatment is finalised.
The process is similar in minimal prep veneer applications where the process requires a small amount of abrasion.
