Teeth Whitening Process

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a professional procedure performed to make the tooth color look whiter. This process is also called ‘bleaching‘. Thanks to bleaching, your teeth can be brought to the desired white tone. Tooth color can be lightened a few shades or whitened to the lightest shade.

There are also non-professional teeth whitening methods. For example, brushing your teeth with lemon and baking soda is one of the most popular methods among the public.

How is Teeth Whitening Done?

Before professional whitening, the dentist makes a mold of the tooth. Then, bacteria and plaque formations on the teeth are cleaned. A gauze is usually used to keep the mouth dry. A barrier is placed in this area to protect the gums from the bleaching solution.

Blaching solution is applied to the front surface of the teeth. Laser light is used to activate the solution. After laser application, it is observed that the solution foams. This means that the solution works and removes stains from the teeth. The bleaching solution is left on the tooth for several minutes.

After the procedure, the teeth are cleaned. Bleaching procedures are usually carried out in several sessions. The mentioned processes are repeated several times to ensure that the teeth reach the desired whiteness. However, depending on the level of whiteness desired by the patient, only one session may be sufficient.

Who Can Have Teeth Whitening?

Bleaching may not be suitable for everyone. Generally, people under the age of 16 are not considered suitable candidates for the procedure. Bleaching is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. People who are allergic to bleaching solution are also not suitable candidates for this procedure.

For the bleaching process, oral and dental health must be at a good level. Bleaching is not a suitable procedure for people who have a lot of decay or fillings. People with healthy gums and no cavities or too many fillings can have teeth whitening.

How Long Does It Take
To Show Teeth Whitening Results?

Seeing the results of the bleaching process depends on the level of stain and yellowing on the tooth. It usually takes a week or two for the teeth to become visibly whiter.

However, for people with high levels of yellowing and stains on their teeth, this period may take between three weeks and a month.

What Should Be Considered
After Teeth Whitening?

Colored foods and drinks should be avoided after the bleaching process. Coffee, tea, chocolate, cherries and dark colored sauces should not be consumed for a while.

Also, carbonated drinks should be avoided for a while. Foods that should not be preferred include foods that are too cold or too hot.

Such methods may cause damage to tooth enamel. For this reason, tooth lightening procedures must be carried out professionally by a dentist.
